Jack’s Comments:  After a year of research and a lot of help from fellow enthusiast we’ve made what I think is the most correct Autolite alternator available to date.  They are made with restored production Autolite front and rear housings, a stator made to our specifications and all new internals.  They come with the correct Autolite engineering number die stamped on them and date codes to match your cars production date.  With your cars engine, options and build date specified an alternator is custom built with the correct color coded engineering number, date code style and location unique to your model. Since we do rely on acquiring original cores we can and have run out so please check the inventory status before ordering. If we are out please email us so we can contact you when they are back in stock.

What it took to get it Dead Nuts On:
DIE STAMPS: Like the ink stamp we found several verified originals to copy.  We then went through the same slow process as the ink stamp to create the artwork for each stamp.  Once we had the artwork it took several attempts and a lot of money to get the die stamps made to match an original after it was stamped. We’ve also had to make several jigs to hold the front alternator housing in place so we can get a good clean deep stamp like the originals.

STATOR:  Like our driveshafts we found the only way to reproduce a part to look like a new NOS part is to follow the same steps the original manufacture did.  This held true with the alternator stator since it was made with materials and methods not used anymore.  After studying the many period Autolite service components and low mileage original stators Ed Meyer and other friends stashed away over the years we knew we had a real challenge.  What we found is the dark colored band on the stator was not a stripe but was the end result of machining the ends of the stators stacked plates after the whole stator was coated with a specialized baked on electrical coating.  We found that the specialized electrical coating was commonly applied sloppy so it would have drips and sags.  After many failures we’ve reproduced the stator to what we believe is a Dead Nuts On part.  Take a look at one of our stators compared to a NOS stator and we think you will agree.  We used the same specialized baked on coating applied sloppy and machined the stator stacks from stators made to our specifications.  We also apply inspection stamps and date codes copied from verified originals and late sixties NOS Autolite stators.

Questions & Answers
Q. I have an original Autolite alternator can I use it as an exchange core or have it rebuilt?
A. Not at this time.  We have such a large inventory of cores now we have suspended core credits.  If you want the an alternator rebuilt we can do that but we do not give a core credit because of the extra handling costs involved in tracking your alternator through the rebuilding process.  It takes about 20 working days after we receive your alternator to rebuild and ship it back to you.  Ship all alternators for exchange or rebuilding to the address on our contact page.

Q. How do I know if I have a true original production Autolite core?
A. Compare the front housing to
this example and the rear housing should match one of examples in this picture.

Q. What ampere do your alternators output?
A. All our alternators put out 55 - 61 amps regardless of what they are stamped.

Q. How do you make the alternator housings look like fresh castings?
A. We don’t glass bead them.  We use a machine specially made to refinish aluminum surfaces.  It removes all stains and gives the aluminum an even fresh cast finish that can’t be achieved with other types of media blasting systems.  The machine also removes small dings and scratches but it won’t hide deeper dings, cracks or factory casting blemishes.

Q. Can I expect the alternator housings to be the same quality as casting made with today’s modern casting methods?
A. No.  Every original used production housing we’ve found are covered with casting blemishes from the factory and commonly have small injuries picked up along their 40+ years in service.  We do closely inspect the housing after they are cleaned to make sure housings with non-factory casting defects noticeable when installed are rejected before rebuilding.  We toss out about 40% of the cores we get in that are damaged or have unsightly blisters that were the result of air getting into the die mold.  With this said, you should expect the housings to have a few production pits and air pockets but no dings or dents.  Rear housings with the Autolite logo on the back typically are not that pronounced or have several missing or partial letters.
